Pretend I am a consultant…..

We should not allow the democrats to frame the discussion on the coming economic cliff.  They want to, as always, say it is the republicans who are “obstructing”.

I can’t for the life of me understand why the republicans let them get away with this.  Now, you know if I can see through this, I am sure our elected republican representatives can see it, right?  And, Tagg, I hear you are advising your dad……

Their position is:  The republicans want to raise taxes on the middle class and that they want to raise taxes on the “millionaires and billionaires.”

They have been pushing this for a long time and I don’t hear any push back on it from our side.

Explain IF NOTHING IS DONE, they will go up on everybody.

All we have to say is,  No, No, No.  It is the democrats who are willing to watch the taxes on everybody to go up, middle class and all, just to try to get their way.

Say it again:  “If we do nothing, taxes will go up.  Democrats, join us in making sure that does not happen.”  Then stand your ground.

Say it over and over:  If we do nothing taxes will go up.  Ask:  Why do the democrats want taxes to go up on everybody?  All republicans want is to leave the current tax rates in place as they have been for the past 10 years.

Republicans, spend some of that money to run ads day and night in order to get through to a person who is doing something else, who is worrying about how to pay that electric bill or house payment or rent or one who is planning menus around the grocery items on sale with the tv on in the background.  .We don’t rush over to the tv when a political ad comes on and intently focus on it.  This is one reason an ad with just words running across the screen is useless.

But you have to explain it,  Or at least say it.  Just say it.   The average person is busy!  We are working, trying to make a living.  We catch things on the fly.  We hear things while cooking dinner, through the cries of babies, while making the bed or cleaning out the refrigerator.

And what I hear is “we don’t want to raise taxes on job creators.”  That doesn’t cut it.  Take my word for it.  This is falling for the trap the democrats have set.  IT FALLS ON DEAF EARS because we are not rich so this won’t affect us.  Sure, go ahead and tax the rich more – as long as it does not raise MY taxes.

After having the spending power of income going down over $2000 already, we can’t have our taxes going up now.

$2,000 a year is the number that sticks in my mind.  That is a LOT of money to a LOT of people.  I know it is not much to you guys who don’t have to give a second thought to how much a gallon of milk or a gallon of gas costs, at least in a very long time.  When one hears the president say “Mitt Romney wants your taxes to go up  some $2,000 a year,” real fear can strike the heart as we can barely get by as it is.

Drive home the fact that if you take ALL the income of the so-called millionaires and billionaires,  it won’t even run the country for 3 months, and it won’t put one red cent in my pocket.   (I think.  I should have heard that so many times by now that it would be embedded in my head.)

Again:  “This is not the time to raise taxes on anybody!  It is time the democrats compromise and allow the tax rates to STAY AS THEY ARE NOW.  The democrats are willing and, in fact, determined the Bush tax cuts expire if they don’t get their way of raising taxes on the “rich.”  So the democrats don’t really “care”, except about themselves.

Say, “It is time for the democrats to compromise  It is time they act in a bi-partisan way and join republicans in preventing taxes from going up on anybody in January.”

Spend some money and put out ads to run 24 hours a day to drive this home.  It will work.

Okay. Got that off my chest.
