Food safety bill may be dead

Well, look at this. The Senate has messed up on the food safety bill.

A food safety bill that has burned up precious days of the Senate’s lame-duck session appears headed back to the chamber because Democrats violated a constitutional provision requiring that tax provisions originate in the House.

By pre-empting the House’s tax-writing authority, Senate Democrats appear to have touched off a power struggle with members of their own party in the House. The Senate passed the bill Tuesday, sending it to the House, but House Democrats are expected to use a procedure known as “blue slipping” to block the bill, according to House and Senate GOP aides.

The debacle could prove to be a major embarrassment for Senate Democrats, who sought Tuesday to make the relatively unknown bill a major political issue by sending out numerous news releases trumpeting its passage.

Thank. you. Lord.

See more at Roll Call.

Apparently, Coburn stands in the way of a fix for this:

According to Senate GOP aides, a unanimous consent agreement is all but certain to be a nonstarter because the bill’s chief opponent, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), will not agree to such a deal.

Coburn “will object and demand changes as [he has] from the get-go,” a GOP aide familiar with the situation said.

So what’s his story?  What’s his game?  Is he going to cave in the end?  I don’t trust any of them after watching the little rat Bart Stupak pretend he was going to vote against Obamacare and then at the last minute voted for it.

I heard that this will essentially put the United States under the U. N in matters of food safety.  More power to the FDA for sure and it does NOT cover meat, poultry and eggs.  Can you believe this?  Remember the blitz about contaminated eggs during the summer?  I was wondering what the hidden agenda was there.  I am still wondering.  This is how incompetent the congress is.  We’ll be so much safer – that is if we don’t eat any meat, poultry, and eggs.  This is just like the financial protection bill, the Frank/Dodd bill.  Sweeping controls handed over to some governmental agency, but not covering Fannie/Freddie.  So let’s see, healthcare, food, finances…..what’s left?  Water?  I’m sure they’re working on it.

Republicans who voted YES in the Senate:

Alexander (R-TN)
Brown (R-MA)
Burr (R-NC)
Collins (R-ME)
Enzi (R-WY)
Grassley (R-IA)
Gregg (R-NH)
Johanns (R-NE)
Kirk (R-IL)
LeMieux (R-FL)
Lugar (R-IN)
Murkowski (R-AK)
Snowe (R-ME)
Vitter (R-LA)
Voinovich (R-OH)

Why did they vote yes?  Why?  I see my senator, La-Muuuw voted for it.  Marco Rubio takes his seat in January.

I heard someone say yesterday that these clowns better pray every day that the American people remain a peace loving, law abiding people.

The only thing they need to be focused on is American’s Tax rates, and Spending – as in how long will they keep extending people’s unemployment benefits? 99 weeks now going on?

The Democrat leadership- the Progressives, are playing politics to the very end. That’s fine with me, let them remind everyone why they lost so big on November 2nd.

What I want for Christmas…I want Darrell Edward Issa to start multiple investigations and probes into what these people have been doing to the U.S. Treasury, since January 2007 when they took power.

mmm Darrell Edward Issa mmm Darrell Edward Issa mmm Darrell Edward Issa 😉

Ree, what about the trillions to the foreign banks and the wikileaks and the fact they don’t have a budget. Yes, there are many things to investigate and if we can just survive until the end of this year…..

While they’re printing money, maybe they can print a little extra to build a prison to “house” them in. Or just build a fence around the capitol and throw them a few bread crumbs every now and then, since they can’t seem to get a fence at the border.

They are disgusting. I’m watching something now (with no sound) and it says “a motion to concur in the senate amendment with an amendment.” Whatever it is, democrats are voting for it and republicans against.
Oh, this is for extending tax cuts up to $250,000. Three republicans yes. Let me guess who that would be.

  3. Bella,

Nancy may be able to get it to pass in the House but it won’t pass in the Senate they are locked. It’s clear the Dems think this is going to help them politically in 2012 election cycle. I don’t think they get it, their voters don’t have that kind of attention span, hell most of them don’t know who Nancy Pelosi is when they are shown a photo of her 🙂

There are 23 Senators up for re election in 2012, it seems to me the RNC, and Karl Rove if he wanted to make himself useful, would be looking to finish what they started in the Senate, get the number of seats they need, and kick Harry Reid to the curb.
