Satire or Tasteless? Or Tasteless Satire?

Everybody is in an uproar about this New Yorker cover — the internet, as well as the MSM.

I just heard some guy rant away about how horrible it is for Obama, the “great” Obama, to be subjected to satire — satire that has been a part of politics for, as someone said, before the time of Christ.   See some recent examples here:  http://michellemalkin.com/2008/07/14/grow-a-pair-obama/

Of course, the truth is, if anybody is going to be offended by this, it should be people like me who believe that there is an element of truth there.  It is US they are making fun of, for God’s sake.

Bill Burton from the Obama campaign explains it all below:

Intent factors into these matters, of course, but no Upper East Side liberal — no matter how superior they feel their intellect is — should assume that just because they’re mocking such ridiculousness, the illustration won’t feed into the same beast in emails and other media. It’s a recruitment poster for the right-wing.”

Well, there you go.

This is as offensive a caricature as any magazine could publish,” says a high-profile Obama supporter, “and I suspect that other Obama supporters like me are also thinking about not subscribing to or buying a magazine that trafficks in such trash.”

I’m sure all at The New Yorker are worried sick.  About as worried as MSNBC was last year when I stopped watching the network.

And MSNBC asks the all-important question, “did it cross the line?”

Chuck Nice, Comedian, just said, and I quote:  “Satire is subtle and if you’re stupid, you probably don’t get it.”
